Walking tour around the Baška Valley

Walking tour around the Baška Valley

Route: Baška – Ispod Zakama – Moon Plateau – Mrgar by the Diviška Pond – Moon Plateau – Moon Path – Baška
Technical information – distance: 11 km – elevation gain: 450 m – highest point: 390 m – walking time: between 5 and 6 hours – official gathering and registration: 9:30 AM in front of the Forza Heritage Hotel – start: 10 AM

This year’s Shepherds’ Expedition will take you along the eastern ridge of the Baška Valley, highlighting the stunning beauty of the karst landscape and offering a visit to a rare example of traditional architecture known as mrgar, a huge flower-shaped dry-stone structure.

After gathering at the Forza Heritage Hotel in the very heart of Baška, at 10 AM, we will start walking up a serpentine road, all the way to a path known as Pod Zakamom. Branching off the main road, the path will take us up a steep incline to the so-called Moon Plateau, a wide expanse of flat rocky terrain that resembles the surface of the Moon; this is also the most demanding section of our expedition. We will continue walking over the Moon Plateau to the mrgar by the Diviška Pond, a natural freshwater pool. After resting for a while and exploring the mrgar, we will start walking back toward Baška; however, this time, we will take a much easier path through an old pine forest, providing you with ample opportunities to rest for your weary feet and enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. The path will take us to the ruins of the Baška Castle and the Church of Saint John the Baptist. There, we will once again take the asphalt road and return to Baška, where we will rejoin the Black Sheep festivities. The trail is moderately strenuous and suited to anyone who can walk 10-odd kilometers over rocky terrain. We recommend that the participants wear hiking gear (sturdy hiking boots, appropriate multilayer clothing ensembles, sun protection, headwear, and walking poles), and take enough food and water.
